Approaching A New Season

May is one of the most important months on the New Zealand dairy calendar for maintenance and preparation. With many farms drying cows off or reducing milking frequency, it’s the ideal opportunity to give your dairy shed the attention it deserves before winter fully sets in.

A well-maintained shed doesn’t just prevent costly breakdowns — it helps protect milk quality, animal health, and keeps everything running efficiently when the next season ramps up again.

Why May Matters for Dairy Shed Maintenance

After months of long milking hours, your plant, pumps, rubberware, and water systems have all taken a hammering. Waiting until calving to fix issues often means expensive emergency callouts, downtime, and unnecessary stress.

May gives farmers a chance to:

  • Carry out preventative maintenance

  • Replace worn components

  • Check compliance requirements

  • Improve efficiency before winter

  • Reduce the risk of breakdowns next season

Don’t Ignore Your Rubberware

One of the most overlooked — but most important — jobs in the shed is changing your rubberware.

Inflations, milk tubing, air lines, and seals wear out over time, even if they still “look alright.” Old rubberware can:

  • Affect milk quality

  • Increase bacteria build-up

  • Reduce milking performance

  • Lead to vacuum issues

  • Create animal health concerns

Regular replacement keeps your plant operating correctly and helps maintain consistent milking performance throughout the season.

If you can’t remember the last time your rubberware was changed, it’s probably time.

Check Your Water Filters at Home and in the Shed

Water quality plays a huge role on dairy farms, both in the shed and at home.

Over time, filters can become blocked with sediment, iron, minerals, or organic matter — especially on bore or tank water supplies. Dirty or overloaded filters can:

  • Reduce water pressure

  • Affect washdown performance

  • Impact appliance life

  • Lower drinking water quality

  • Cause issues with hot water systems

May is a good reminder to:

  • Replace household drinking water filters

  • Check UV systems are operating correctly

  • Inspect sediment filters in the shed

  • Ensure water systems are winter-ready

Clean water is essential for both milk production and everyday farm life.
